What Social Media is NOT: Part One

Social Media is NOT about making money, it is NOT about growing your business, money, going viral or even “the win.”

I have three concepts to help me explain what I mean:

Firstly, I have to talk about Lady Gaga. In her recent Oscar acceptance speech a couple of weeks ago, she said that it wasn’t about the win. It was about the process of getting to the win. Lady Gaga achieved her award by not giving up, but by being brave and proceeding to go forward even through all of her struggles. If you’ve watched her documentary, you know that she has had a compelling story with a challenging journey, and I’m very inspired by her! (She is not the only one) I am inspired by all the women we’re celebrating this month, the women who have gone before us in generations past and future generations to come.

Social media is not about money or getting new business. It’s about the journey, not giving up, being brave and really putting yourself out there. If you are worried about the outcome of your posts, your connections or your lack of response when you follow up with someone you may need to re-access your goals and efforts.

If you feel like social media is not worth it because you’ve been trying for months, and you’re not getting any new business this may be a sign that you are not showcasing your authentic self through your passions. If you are starting to wonder “what am I missing” or you don’t understand how other people are getting success through social media, you feel like this isn’t for your business, and your clients aren’t online – They are! But no one likes to be sold.

Secondly, What social media is: Social media is about providing a place for your customers to come and ask questions and see with just a glance how dedicated you are to giving them the BEST experience possible when investing in your products. People want to do business with people they know and can trust. By sharing more about yourself online, it increases your chances of someone coming to you for business instead of going to their brother’s friend who does the same thing you do with half the effort. When they need something, your followers are going to think of you instantly and be more tied to your business and to you because they feel like they know you and you are top of mind. For example, just by seeing that you both live in the same city or cheer for the same sports team or that you’re both really into dancing, these commonalities can really enhance your online reputation and lead business back to you in the long run.

It’s not about the business but the journey and sharing your passions with others – that’s where the magic happens. When you’re authentic with who are as a person, people will want to invest in your business, refer people to you and they’ll feel indebted to you because of the connection you two share.

Thirdly, Social media is also about proving something to yourself. I’ve been in business for 5 years, and I’ve learned a lot in my journey. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, and I’ve had a lot to celebrate with what I’ve been doing. I have a weekly group that I attend at 6:45am, and I love it – it makes me so happy to connect with those business owners and be a part of that group. My life gets enhanced by those relationships, and it is super fun. Whether you’re in BNI or a chamber or rotary, paying those dues (investing monetarily) to be a part of those organizations is hard work, and it’s great you have that cash flow to do that. It’s an investment but it is creating a greater sense of self and community, and you’re changing the world just by being a part of those organizations. And that’s what social media is about – being social, connecting with others and leveraging those relationships even further.

At the end of the day, it’s about the relationships I create and cultivate, not about where I can get business or more orders from. It’s about what can I offer to my community, and how I can help others. My own self-development is also a substantial motivating factor – where I’m at spiritually, mentally, and physically is most important and then at the end of it all, if I get business from it, that’s awesome. I’m looking to inspire others to be the best that they can be, go after their dreams every single day and learn from their mistakes. That’s just a part of the journey and the fun.
