How to sustain determination – 3 Tips!

Dogged determination is a virtue we so praise in this American life. Not unique to the U.S. but it’s certainly a characteristic we laud in nearly every aspect of society – the underdog, the startup, the inventor, the aspiring writer, actor, entrepreneur or overall, self-starter. These are the people we watch movies about and the stories we follow online. We worship a stellar comeback. Our culture’s favorite characters of fiction and of history are full of grit, passion and determination.

We adore the “work-hard, play-hard” motto even if play is infrequent due to all that working. We hold onto the idea that working hard for what we want and what we believe in will result in dreams come true.

So how do all the “greats” we idolize, the history makers, remain so determined. What keeps them fighting through obstacles on their journey? Resilience. Knowing how to bounce back, renew focus, and take risks.

1. Bounce Back –

What is your bounce rate? And, no, we’re not talking about how quickly someone leaves your website, though this important to track too. We are talking about how long it takes your and your team to bounce back from a mis-step. Richard Branson puts it like this, “the ability to bounce back after a setback is the single most important trait an entrepreneurial venture can posses.” The better you bounce, the more resilient you will be and the easier you will live out your determination rather than outlive it.

2. Renew Focus –

It is far too easy to become distracted, to forget our original goals, and lose sight of where we are headed. Determination can lead us down the proverbial rabbit hole if we aren’t intentional about our direction. But, if we, as the quote says, “Starve our distractions, and feed our focus,” we can remain resilient in the context of chaos. It often only takes a minute to reset and ask ourselves, “What is my purpose for doing this? Does it further my goal? Am I moving in the right direction?” If the answers are clear and in line with our goals, then our determination is focused on the right path.

3. Take Risks –

Brené Brown describes risk in her book Rising Strong, “ I want to be in the arena. I want to be brave with my life. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our asses kicked. We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can’t have both.” This has never been more true in an age of social media when personal and professional lives are memorialized online. Ideas are shared and cannot be unseen. The undo button isn’t always available. BUT, the resilient among us take risks knowing that courage is better than status quo and that determination requires risk.

Resilience will carry us through the days when we feel less determined. Choose to bounce back well, renew focus frequently, and take risks confidently.

These are certainly our goals here at Omni. We are determined to support your online brand and determined to be a community to help you build yours. For more business coaching and social media support check out our community platforms here.
