Adapt, Then Adopt – How to Help Your Business Keep Up

How can you adapt today?

We think the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is in itself very OLD.

In 2017, the proverbial “old dog” learns lots of new tricks and certainly has to in our technology driven era. Just ask the parent of millennials who has now mastered Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat only to keep up with their children’s adventures online.

Unfortunately, in business there is little grace for those of us who struggle to keep up with all the new tricks. We often fear appearing dated or irrelevant in comparison to our competition. We want to adapt but the bar seems so very high.

“Adapt then adopt” is key to bridging old and new, and exceeding that high bar.

Yes, new isn’t always better. No, old is not synonymous with obsolete. But, relying on both old and new is how businesses survive changing markets.

Rely on what you know, your classic products, or your staple services, and simply update them with new ideas that fit today’s market. By adapting to new concepts and taking risks with new technology, you can test which systems will work for your business.

When we successfully adopt new tools and integrate them with older methods, we help our business thrive.

For example, take your reliable excel sheet of business contacts once used for print marketing mailers and use it instead with MailChimp for an email marketing campaign. This is one way to adapt a classic goal (mailed marketing) to a new tool (email automation services). Traditional mail marketing is not obsolete, but new online methods create a whole new set of advantages.

With added advantages and increased options, each new “trick” and technology advancement motivates us to adapt.

We have to be mindful of whether a new tool is simplifying our business, or at the very least sustaining relevance. If it is doing neither, toss it. If it is supporting relevancy but complicated to implement, watch tutorials and seek advice.

And, of course it’s ideal when a new tool is both simple and business relevant.
